1. Delving into the wisdom of local communities

One of the highlights was attending workshops led by local communities and organizations. They shared their unique perspectives and solutions to local challenges, offering invaluable insights that can help Oxfam shape its work and partnerships in a more meaningful way. It was a humbling reminder that true understanding often comes from listening to those directly impacted by the issues. This focus on amplifying voices from the Global South resonated deeply with the values of Oxfam and its commitment to working alongside these communities. - Aya Haydar

2. Forming unexpected alliances

The forum brimmed with unexpected encounters! One day, I found myself sharing chai with a group of farmers from a remote village, discussing sustainable agriculture practices. Another day, I participated in a workshop on gender equality with young activists from a completely different cultural background. These unexpected alliances, fostered by Oxfam's presence at the forum, were the most enriching experiences for me. They exemplified the building of alliances and collaboration that is crucial for tackling global challenges, and I felt proud to be part of an organization that prioritizes such connections. - Aya Haydar

3. Insightful dialogues

For me, the forum was an inspiring convergence of global activists and thinkers, fostering dialogue and action on pressing issues. The panel discussions on inequality and justice as well as on the care economy were particularly insightful. Through these sessions, I gained valuable strategies for change and effective movement building. - Gloria Masheti

4. Calling for a free Palestine!

The sight and sound at Bhrikuti Mandap – the venue of the World Social Forum 2024 in Kathmandu – on the morning of February 15 will remain etched in my memory forever.

”Free, free Palestine”, “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” slogans filled the air. Soon, the Palestinian tri-colour — with three equal horizontal stripes in black, white, and green from top to bottom overlaid by a red triangle on the hoist — were here, there everywhere. Pacards, banners and festoons demanding freedom for Palestine and the immediate ceasefire in Gaza were in the hands of scores of people from different countries like Morocco, Tunisia, Syria, Turkey, Canada, France, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh and India.

I was so overwhelmed with everything happening around me and began capturing the moments in my phone. Someone handed me over a flag of Palestine and I became part of the slogan shouting brigade. - Devadeep Purohit

“The Palestine solidarity - so far away from the site of the conflict was really heartwarming.”

Witnessing the dedication and passion of activists from across the globe reignited my own sense of hope for the future. It served as a powerful reminder that even amidst challenges, there's a global movement working tirelessly to create a better world. Being part of this movement with Oxfam fills me with immense pride and determination to continue fighting for a better future. This spark of hope for the future, rekindled at the forum, fuels Oxfam's continued efforts and motivates us all to work towards a more just and equitable world. - Aya Haydar

Among thousands of spirited activists, a bunch of young people decided to claim a spot to showcase their art. Their corner became a conversation point for activists from across the world. Each piece stirred myriad of emotions – solidarity, rage, and hope for a better world. World Social Forum 2024 became an exhibition spot as many artists were able to get support by selling their artwork as stickers, T shirts and range of other merchandise. - Himanshi Matta

The most powerful aspect of the forum wasn't the speeches or panels, but the energy of the people. To see thousands of individuals from all walks of life united for a common cause – a more just and equitable world – was truly awe-inspiring. It showcased the power of collective action and the potential for positive change when people come together. Oxfam's presence at the forum, actively engaging with diverse stakeholders, reaffirmed its commitment to supporting and amplifying this collective voice. - Aya Haydar

10. Overdose of Nepalese food

The grounds of Bhrikuti Mandap were filled with the aroma of freshly fried potato pakoras, steamy momos, Sel Roti, Bara, Sekuwa, Bhel puri chat, tangy pani puris and a lot more. There were some healthy options as well with fresh fruits and juices as the weather kept confusing us with moments of either extreme heat or a cool breeze in shade. - Himanshi Matta

11. The collective spirit of activism that extends beyond language and borders

What I liked most about WFS is that everyone shared their views on this platform without any fear or hesitation. Though all participants came from diverse backgrounds, somehow, we were able to connect with each other. Our contexts might be different, but the challenges and stories are more or less the same. Moreover, in one case, we were all united and chanting "Free Free Palestine." We were multilingual, but language was no longer a barrier to raising our voice for human rights. For me, this is the ultimate beauty of activism. - Tasnima Mukit

12. Our shared humanity

As part of the Oxfam delegation at the forum, I found myself surrounded by incredible individuals. Hearing the diverse experiences of fellow Oxfam participants from across Asia fighting for social justice was incredibly inspiring. But the true power of the forum came from sharing stories with activists from different countries. It was a beautiful demonstration of how seemingly individual struggles become a powerful tapestry of global solidarity, reminding us that borders are just a way to divide, not unite, when it comes to our shared humanity and desire for a better world. - Aya Haydar
